Researchers at iStopMM have for the first time described the prevalence of smoldering multiple myeloma and the findings indicate that it is present in 0.5% of people over 40. The high prevalence of smoldering multiple myeloma has implications for future treatment policies in multiple myeloma because people with this precursor condition, in cases where it has a high chance of developing into malignant multiple myeloma, will probably be invited to start drug treatment in the next few years.
